Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism Cooperates with Gongshu District to Build the Grand Canal Theater

On the afternoon of March 11, the signing ceremony of the cooperation between Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and the People’s Government of Gongshu District, Hangzhou for the co-construction of the Grand Canal Theater was held. Chu Ziyu, Secretary of the Party Group and director of Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, Diao Yuquan, member of the Party Group and Deputy Director of Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, Zhu Jianming, Secretary of Gongshu District Party Committee, Zhang Yan, Deputy Secretary of Gongshu District Party Committee and Head of Gongshu District, and Wang Shuping, the Deputy Head of Gongshu District attended the ceremony.

The construction of the Grand Canal Culture Belt is an important decision and deployment made by the new-era Central Party Committee and State Council, and is an important cultural project to build and publicize the image of China, show Chinese civilization and display cultural confidence.

Last May, the Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and the People’s Government of Gongshu District, Hangzhou jointly launched the cooperation of the project “strengthening the construction of theaters and schools locally and promoting the integration and reformation of the Grand Canal Culture and Tourism”. The cooperation between Zhejiang Province and Gongshu District is a practical measure to implement the Party Committee and People’s Government of Zhejiang Province’s high-level promotion the Grand Canal Cultural Belt-Zhejiang Section Construction goal and task, an important cooperation between Zhejiang Province and Gongshu District of jointly building the Grand Canal’s cultural and tourism golden card where Zhejiang Province and Gongshu District share resources and make their respective advantages complementary to each other, and an innovative practice of promoting the integration of culture and tourism, developing cultural industry and building the new cultural landmark of the Grand Canal.

The Grand Canal Theater is located in the second phase of the Grand Canal Central Park and covers an area of 142 mu (1 mu is roughly equal to 666 sq m), including the theater and ancillary houses, of which the theater covers an area of 19 thousand sq m and the underground roughly 50 thousand sq m. The design of the Grand Canal Theater incorporates the water elements of the Grand Canal and when seen from a bird’s eye view, you can clearly see the theater resembles a beautiful whirly water wave. The theater contains 1200 general-purpose theaters where song and dance dramas, operas, modern drama, symphonies, musical dramas, etc can be performed and 400 multi-functional small theaters where musical dramas, parent-child operas, conferences and lecture can be held. The project was started in January, 2018 and currently, it is in the stage of indoor and outdoor fine decoration. The next-step task is to carry out the simultaneous construction of the park green belt. The project is estimated to finish in the first half of 2021.

Chu Ziyu pointed out that Zhejiang Province and Gongshu District’s co-building the Grand Canal Theater is a good attempt to coordinate to promote the construction of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt – Zhejiang Section and is a reform and exploration of Zhejiang Province and Gongshu District’s cooperation in promoting the deep integration and development of Culture and Tourism. It’s necessary to work hard and together to build a cultural highland and to build the theater into “people’s theater, the palace of art and an international theater”; It’s necessary to work hard and together to build a cultural landmark with the goal of building the Grand Canal National Cultural Park into the cultural center of Zhejiang; It’s necessary to work together to actively bring in cultural talents to make the Grand Canal Theater more popular and more vibrant; it’s necessary to work hard and together to build a cultural home, to carry out various kinds of activities that benefit people, to create a good cultural home atmosphere for the people of Gongshu and people in Hangzhou and to build the Grand Canal Cultural Belt-Zhejiang Section into a beautiful scenery of “Poetic Zhejiang”.

Zhe Jiangming showed that for the next step, Gongshu District will also actively plan numerous heavyweight projects such as the Grand Canal Museum, Huafeng Industry Memory Corridor, Xiaohe Oil Depot Ruins Park, develop more high-quality cultural and tourism products, cultivate more noted cultural brands, continuously improve the public cultural service system, strive to build the core demonstration area of Grand Canal Cultural Belt, the sample area of Grand Canal National Cultural Park and add new highlights to the Grand Canal Cultural Belt-Zhejiang Section.
