Top Ten Scenic Spots in Zhejiang

Zhejiang, rich in natural resources, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in China which has also been hailed as “the land of fish and rice”. With attractive natural scenery and glorious cultural heritages, it is easy to see why there are many popular scenic spots residing in Zhejiang and here are the province’s top ten:

One - West Lake in Hangzhou

The West Lake is undoubtedly one of the most renowned landmarks in China and is particularly noted for its splendid historical and cultural scenery. The famous picturesque landscape and its surrounding parks, each with their own distinguishing features, enhances the charm of the West Lake in any season. Besides the lake’s unbelievable beauty, there are also more than 60 national and provincial cultural relics and more than 20 museums scattered about.

Two - Yandang Mountain in Wenzhou

Yandang Mountain is very famous in China not only for its marvellous landscape but it is also one of China's top ten must-see scenic spots and a National AAAAA Level scenic resort. The mountainous scenery is unique – the peaks, waterfalls and caves set it apart as the most important mountain in southeast China. In 2005 UNESCO named Yandang Mountain as a global geo-park.  It is reported that Yandang Mountain was formed due to activity of a typical rhyolitic caldera complex which came to existence around 120 million years ago in the Cretaceous period. Therefore the area serves as an important place for studying the effect of volcanic activity during the Mesozoic Era.

Three -Mount Putuo in Zhoushan

Mount Putuo, one of the four sacred Buddhist Mountains, is located in the estuary of the Qiantang River, southeast of the Zhoushan Archipelago. It is the only island that boasts both spectacular natural scenery and religious history. It is one of the first national key scenic spots and also a National AAAAA level scenic resort. Deeply influenced by Buddhist culture and its splendid natural scenery, Mount Putuo has become a Buddhist Kingdom on the Sea.

Four- Qiandao Lake Scenic Area in Hangzhou

Located in the west of Zhejiang, Qiandao Lake Resort (also known as Thousand-Island Lake Resort) is 129 kilometers away from Hangzhou. It is one of the “Five Most Beautiful Lakes” in China and is dotted with 1078 verdurous islands of different sizes. It boasts crystal-clear waters and luscious green forests and finds itself in the category of the first 44 National Scenic Parks approved by the State Council as well as being the largest national forest park in China.

Five- Wuzhen Water Town in Jiaxing

Wuzhen Ancient Town, located in the northern part of Zhejiang province just west of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, is an AAAAA scenic area with distinctive features and a history of over 6000 years. Criss-crossed by multiple rivers and home to a wealth of restaurants and souvenir shops it is no wonder Wuzhen has been referred to as the little Venice of Italy. The town is divided into four parts, Dongzha, Nanzha, Xizha and Beizha with Dongzha and Xizha being the two areas most favored by tourists.

Six- Mount Tiantai Scenic Area in Taizhou

Mount Tiantai, situated in Taizhou City, is one of Zhejiang’s National Parks and is also known for its beautiful scenery and for being the birthplace of the Tiantai-sect of Chinese Buddhism. The area is home to many historical sites and Buddhist relics including the Guoqing Temple, Shiliang, Chicheng Hill, Hanshan Lake and Huading Peak. Guoqing Temple enjoys over 3 million Followers in Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia.

Seven- Hengdian World Studios in Jinhua

Located in the town of Hengdian in Jinhua, Hengdian World Studios is the largest Chinese studio.  Covering an area of 121 square kilometres it has even been awarded the title of “China’s Hollywood” by an American magazine. Construction began in the mid 1990s and the studios consist of movie and television with regional characteristics of the south and the north and two super-large modern studios, which have attracted tens of thousands of directors to work there. With all the scenic spots open to tourists, Hengdian World Studios has become a tourism leisure resort with a unique charm. Today, the studio has a full set of facilities, including an amusement park, nightclub, sauna, performing arts center, health club and bowling center.

Eight - Nanxun Ancient Town in Huzhou

Nanxun Ancient Town, located in the east of Huzhou, is a famous historical and cultural town that boasts numerous historic sites and natural landscapes. Its scenery proudly unfurls bridges, rivulets and cottages set up by waters with a large number of well-preserved ancient houses, gardens and picturesque locations including the famous Little Lotus Garden, Jia Ye Tang –a famous private library and Zhang Shiming’s Former Residence. The harmony and unity between culture and natural scenery make the town extremely fascinating and tourists can still take a stroll in the ancient town to witness life of the local people.

Nine-Xixi National Wetland Park in Hangzhou

Located at the western part of Hangzhou City, less than 5 km from the West Lake, Xixi National Wetland Park is unique for its proximity to urban areas. The park is the first and the only wetland park that has integrated urban life with farming and culture. Along with Xihu (West Lake) and Xiling (Xiling Seal Engravers Society), famed for its abundant natural sceneries and cultural heritages, Xixi National Wetland Park is known as one of the Three "Xi's".

Ten - Former Residence of Lu Xun in Shaoxing

Lu Xun (Zhou Shuren), born in Shaoxing, is known as the father of modern Chinese literature. The former residence of Lu Xun is located on the intersection of East Changfang (No.208 Lu Xun Road today) and it has over 80 rooms all of which are built in a typical late Qing Dynasty (1810-1813) style. The house has been restored to its original state by the government and today, in addition to the well-preserved furnishings, the house is also decorated with photos showing Lu Xun’s childhood and his history, the former Shaoxing residence and private school buildings of the Zhou family, including the Tai Gate of the Zhou Family, the Sanwei Study, Baicao Garden, Changqing Temple and the Xianheng Wine Shop, many of which have been named in his novels and essays.
