The Most Beautiful Lakes in Zhejiang

Zhejiang, a renowned tourist destination in China, has many wonderful lakes scattered in and around its province and the China Landscape and Historic Sites Association has selected the top ten most beautiful ones in Zhejiang which includes the following: the West Lake in Hangzhou, the Qiandao Lake in Chun’an, South Lake in Jiaxing, Jianhu Lake in Shaoxing, Xianghu Lake in Xiaoshan, Dongqian Lake in Ningbo, the South-north Lake in Haiyan, Xiazhu Lake in Deqing, Feiyun Lake in Wenzhou and Hanshan Lake in Tiantai.  

Top one - West Lake

West Lake

The West Lake is the most significant landmark in Hangzhou and is also a National 5A Tourist Resort. The beauty of the West Lake has won the city the reputation of “Paradise on Earth” which is clearly understood from its famous picturesque landscape and more than 100 surrounding parks, each with its own distinguishing features. As the old saying goes, “Of the thirty-six West Lakes east or west, the West Lake in Hangzhou is the best.”

Top two- Qiandao Lake

Qiandao Lake

Located in Chun'an County, west of Zhejiang Province, Qiandao Lake (also known as thousand-island Lake) is one of the five most beautiful lakes in China and is dotted with 1078 verdurous islands of different sizes. Qiandao Lake is also known as Xin'anjiang Reservoir, a man-made lake built in 1959 during the construction of Xin'anjiang Hydropower Station. Embraced by green hills, scattering islets and clear waters, QiandaoLake is praised as being a “picturesque lake”.

Top three- South Lake  

South Lake

South Lake Tourist Area, a National AAAAA Level scenic spot, is located in Jiaxing City. It is not only famed for its picturesque scenery and traditional Chinese architecture but also for being an important national demonstration base for education. The South Lake witnessed the first National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1921 when the Chinese Communist Party was established which set sail to the Chinese revolution.

Top four - Jianhu Lake  

Jianhu Lake

Jianhu Lake is located in the south western part of Shaoxing and is enveloped by green hills. It is a typical region of rivers and lakes in the south of the Yangtze River where the waters are crystal-clear and rich in calcium and lithium. The unique natural and geographical environment of the Jianhu Lake is particularly suitable for brewing high quality rice wine and helps Shaoxing Wine win unanimous praises from consumers both at home and abroad.

Top five- South-North Lake  

South North Lake

The South-North Lake is a unique and charming scenic spot which has harmoniously combined the view of hills with a lake and sea. It is highly revered for "there are gradations of hills, rippling waters and wonders of the sea”. The elegant landscape is typical of views seen in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Top six - Xianghu Lake  

Xianghu Lake

Reputed to be the sister of West Lake, Xianghu Lake has pleasant scenery as well as a long history. There are a number of heritage sites, scenic spots, gardens, lakes and views and it is also known as the cradle of ancient civilization. Here Kuahuqiao (Cross-the-Lake Bridge) Relics have been excavated and the earliest canoe in the world has also been discovered here too.

Top seven - Dongqian Lake

Dongqian Lake

Located in the south eastern part of Ningbo, Dongqian Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Zhejiang and a state-level tourist resort. The 1,200-year-old man-made lake boasts natural resources and is also a historical and cultural site. It is set in a beautiful ecological environment which is home to picturesque scenery formed by lakes, green hills and luscious woods and which harmoniously merges the grace of West Lake and the verve of Taihu Lake.

Top eight - Xiazhu Lake

Xiazhu Lake

Xiazhu Lake is located in Deqing which is rich in history and known for its cultural sites. The lake covers an area of 36.5 square kilometers and the water surface accounts for 3.4 square kilometers. As the biggest wetland park in the south of Zhejiang, Xiazhu Lake Wetlands Scenic Area consists of elegant hills, lakes and wetlands and there are more than 600 small islands scattered on the lake.

Top nine - Feiyun Lake

Feiyun Lake

Feiyun Lake is located in Wencheng County on the upper middle reaches of Feiyun River in the south western part of Wenzhou. The lake is the biggest man-made lake in southern Zhejiang province and is renowned for its breath-taking landscape and engaging environment. Combining a man-made landscape with natural scenery it has become a hot touristic spot for sightseeing, scientific exploration and a summer vacation.

Top ten - Hanshan Lake

Hanshan Lake

Hanshan Lake (also known as Lishimen Reservoir), surrounded by dense forest, is a man-made lake that covers an area of 650 thousand square meters. It is also an important national demonstration base for education. Known for its elegance and serenity and together with its convenient transportation links, the lake area has recently been chosen as a place in which to build a tourist resort village.
